How to look after your Handmade Jewellery

I use high quality, recycled and sustainable materials and take pride in making you jewellery you will enjoy wearing every day and forever. In order to help you best maintain your statement jewellery pieces, I’ve put together a few tips that should help:

  • Over time and with regular wear, silver jewellery will naturally darken due to the effects of oxidation. Natural skin oils, dust, pollution and regular exposure to water can also hasten this process and lead to tarnishing, which can make your jewellery look black. It’s best practice to apply your moisturisers, tanning lotions, nail polish (and remover) and perfumes before you put your jewellery on, as these may permanently tarnish it.

  • Storing your silver jewellery in a sealed plastic bag or airtight box when not being worn, has the effect of keeping out the air that causes the oxidation. Cool, dry and dark storage is best.

  • Avoid keeping your jewellery in direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure can cause gemstones to fade or lose their lustre.

  • Silver is an antiseptic metal but it is also sensitive to water, so it’s best to take your jewellery off when showering/bathing, swimming or washing up.

  • Silver scratches easily, so avoid wearing your rings if you’re doing prolonged manual work or gardening and try to avoid storing lots of jewellery items together.

Cleaning Your Jewellery

In addition to effective storage methods, keeping your jewellery clean will help to maintain its beauty. There are various ways you can clean your silver jewellery:

  • Bicarbonate of soda mixed with a little water can be used on a cotton wool pad or cotton cloth. Rinse clean and pat dry.

  • A mild hand soap or washing up liquid with warm water, used with a soft toothbrush. Rinse clean and pat dry.

  • A silver polishing cloth or liquid ‘dip’ cleaner are worthwhile investments if you have a significant silver collection, as these will keep your pieces shining for longer. These cleaning products are easily available at most large supermarkets.
